Marketing & Graphic Design Assistant

The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans (SACNAS) is the largest multicultural and multidisciplinary STEM diversity organization in the country. SACNAS is an inclusive organization dedicated to fostering the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM. SACNAS serves over 5,400 members and has over 150 student and professional chapters throughout the United States and its territories. SACNAS influences a larger STEM community of over 25,000 through outreach, advocacy, and production of programs, conferences, and events. 

The Marketing & Graphic Design Assistant is a position within the SACNAS Development and Communications Department that focuses primarily on website editing, social media and digital marketing, and graphic design to support year-round events, including our largest event, the SACNAS Annual Conference. The Assistant will create compelling visual content, assist with content updates on the website and email, and provide social media support when needed. This position plays a key role in ensuring that SACNAS branding is visually consistent across digital and print materials. The position reports to the Manager, Marketing & Communications. This is a temporary part-time contract position. This position can be performed remotely. 

 

THE JOB 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Design digital and print materials, including logos, digital ads, flyers, brochures, posters, conference merchandise, and other assets. 
  • Utilize Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Canva to create high-quality visual content. 
  • Perform photo manipulation and editing to enhance images for various marketing purposes. 
  • Assist in designing marketing collateral for email campaigns and social media graphics. 
  • Video editing skills, especially for short-form content such as social media clips and promotional videos. 
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to ensure innovative and impactful designs. 

 

Website Support and Maintenance 

Support the coordination of website updates and final content on the organization’s website, ensuring content remains accurate, visually appealing, and aligned with brand standards. 

  • This position serves as part of a broader team that helps develop, maintain, and update it regularly. Ensure all materials adhere to SACNAS brand guidelines and maintain a consistent visual identity.
  • Work with internal teams to develop creative assets for fundraising, membership engagement, and outreach campaigns.
  • Assist in drafting, editing, and optimizing digital content for various platforms.
  • Support website updates and external communications before, during, and after conferences and events. 

Social Media

  • Provide occasional support for social media content creation, using Canva for quick-turnaround designs. 
  • Create and edit short-form videos for social media, including assembling footage, adding sound, and producing engaging content for Reels and TikToks.
  • Engage with followers and respond to comments and questions in a professional and appropriate mannerAssist with basic social media engagement, including monitoring and responding to comments/messages if needed. 
  • Assist with scheduling social posts. Experience with HubSpot or a content scheduler is a plus, but not a requirement. 
  • Source relevant thought leadership articles to share across SACNAS social channels to spark conversation amongst followers. 

Cross-Functional Support 

  • Collaborate with staff and management to ensure that marketing and design efforts align with organizational goals
  • Attend internal team meetings to stay informed and contribute to planning discussions as needed. 
  • Keep up to date with industry best practices in graphic design, digital marketing, and branding. 
  • Assist with writing, creating, editing, delivering, and optimizing a range of digital content. 
  • Advance the mission and support the building of community across organizations onlinemember and social media platforms, and graphic designs created. 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  •  Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 1-3 years’ work experience. 
  • Outreach experience working with undergraduate students, graduates, administrators, and faculty members from backgrounds currently underrepresented in STEM is desired. 

 

CRITICAL SKILLS, QUALITIES, AND ABILITIES 

  •  Strong commitment to and alignment with the SACNAS mission. 
  • Proficiency in graphic design tools, including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Canva. 
  • Basic experience with website content updates (HubSpot, WordPress or similar platforms preferred). 
  • Video editing skills are a plus (Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Canva video editing, CapCut or similar tools) 
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube). 
  • HubSpot and Smartsheet experience is a plus, but training will be provided. 
  • Attention to detail in branding, layout, and typography. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to handle multiple design projects and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Self-motivated and creative problem-solver with a proactive approach to tasks. 
  • Willingness to embrace feedback and continuously refine creative work. 
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and Google Docs. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and handle shifting priorities. 
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Salary  

Salary Range: $20/hour DOE 

The salary range outlined above is for the state of California and represents the organization’s good faith minimum and max range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location.
